Juan Sanchez, Clay Artist

I just discovered a ceramic artist, Juan Sanchez, from San Juan de Oriente, near Masaya, a town about 35 minutes from Managua. Masaya is the center of Nicaraguan arts and crafts, and is the home of a large "Artisan's Market". Next time I'm in Masaya I'll try to find out more about Juan Sanchez. He is one of a number of ceramic artists who design beautiful pots in warm, earthy colors. Very few of the pots found for sale are signed, so his are special.

Masaya is also famous for its furniture -- small workshops line the streets, with showrooms that illustrate their best work. If you don't see what you want, just bring a picture, or sketch something, or glance through the "catalogues" at the workshop. The very talented wood workers can replicate almost everything, as well as producing exquisite original furniture designs, appropriate for elegant or casual homes.

We spent hours wandering through the furniture shops, testing the comfort and sturdiness of the work. A number of other small towns near Masaya, especially Masatepe, are also famous for their furniture, excelling in wicker work. Despite what looks like a scowl on my face (it was from the bright sunshine!), it was a delightful experience. Some of the shops wind far behind what appears to be a small storefront, so exploration is always in order!
